Ski Report #1: Les 2 Alpes, France

23 Jan

I’ve invited my husband, Stuart, to cover the skiing blogs. He’s the true ski enthusiast with 47 years experience. I just tag along. Our first ski destination on this trip was an area new to both of us. We invited our son Tristan and his London housemate Travis to join us for four days of skiing/boarding. We had almost a metre of snow fall the second day and night which you can see in the two photos of the same wood shed and burying our rented car!

Here’s Stuart’s report:

The village of ‘The 2 Alps’, as the local Brits refer to it, is charming for a French ski resort. Built initially in the 1940s and 1950s it has few multistorey buildings and most are timber clad. It’s not as cutesy as your traditional Swiss or Austrian village, but way ahead of most other French resorts, including its neighbour, Alpe D’Huez. It has a good selection of hotels and a large number of apartments but seemingly few chalets. Restaurants there are a plenty in the village, as well as the inevitable ‘Gogo’ bar and Irish pub.

The scenery is of course extraordinary (as the photos attest). With 225 km of pistes with 2300 metres of vertical descent from the glacier to the village it’s the best French resort I’ve encountered for black pistes and plenty of off piste. Beginners are well catered for. There is a lack of intermediate runs back to base.

The only real negative was the archaic lift system but we hear there are plans to improve this.

We prefer staying in shared, catered chalets and found a gem, Chalet Michelle. One of the delights was that the chalet was a ‘bubble’ ride down the mountain in the ancient and unspoilt Savoie village of Venosc. The other delight was our English hosts, Michelle and Bryan, who could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Keen skiers that they are, they are even keener cyclists and enjoy the company of their Australian visitors. Just don’t mention Cadel!
