Cornish Cliff Walking: Penzance (Marazion) to Porthleven (11 miles)

20 Sep

We looked at the OS map of the full 14 mile hike from Penzance to Porthleven and decided to cut it down to 11 by taking a taxi to Marazion, just by St Michael’s Mount. As it was the first part was boring, low scrubby seafront bordered by cabbage farms. The views improved as the day progressed.

The walking was moderate in the degree of difficulty however by the time we reached our lunch stop at Sydney Beach Stuart’s knee had had enough and he went on to Porthleven by taxi (and did our clothes washing bless him!)

The afternoon walking was much improved with some gorgeous cliffs but the distance was beginning to tell on our legs and feet.

As we pushed through weariness into Porthleven Harbour towards our hotel, the Harbour Inn, Stuart was just returning from his reccy to the laundrette. Dinner that night at Kota on the harbourside was possibly the best food and service of the trip for everyone. Margaret, John and Stuart ate the two course 17 pound set menu of local fish while the chef took up the vegan challenge and delivered me a Japanese-influenced delicious two course meal – every mouthful was amazing.

A fitting way to finish a tough day. Our final walking day tomorrow!
